Community input needed

The St. Louis Thriving Community Program (TCP)* is addressing the transportation challenges around the major corridors of Bellefontaine Road in unincorporated Spanish Lake and Riverview Drive, a shared road in St. Louis City and County.  These corridors may benefit from improved access to public transit, increased safety, and flooding mitigation.

Through public engagement events, community members can help shape plans to ensure that potential future updates to these corridors benefit local residents and address long-standing infrastructure concerns.

The upcoming opening of WildCare Park, a 425-acre expansion of the St. Louis Zoo in Spanish Lake, is expected to generate nearly $600 million in economic impact by 2034 and increase travel along Bellefontaine Road and Riverview Drive, further highlighting the importance of studying improvements for these corridors.

On Wednesday, April 9, from 4 to 7 p.m., the community is invited to join the open house at the Twillman House to discuss the future of Bellefontaine Road and share experiences with road safety, public transit needs, and ideas for improving multimodal infrastructure.

This event will also build on the Spanish Lake Town Center Master Plan, which emphasizes the need for streetscape improvements and better access to public spaces. With the economic opportunities presented by WildCare Park, the area is uniquely positioned to leverage new investments for long-term improvements that benefit the Spanish Lake community.

On Saturday, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., local residents are invited to join the open house at Chain of Rocks Park to discuss plans for Riverview Drive—a major corridor connecting the City of St. Louis to the future WildCare Park.

This area is prone to flooding and lacks essential pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure. Feedback from residents, business owners, and other Spanish Lake stakeholders can help shape future projects that address these challenges such as a “complete streets” initiative that enhances safety, mitigates flooding, and improves multimodal access.

These events will provide an opportunity for community members to share concerns and priorities directly with representatives from St. Louis County, the City of St. Louis, and STL Partnership. Through collaboration, the community can create a safer, more resilient, and connected future. For more information, contact Maude Trost, Senior Project Manager.

*The Thriving Communities Program (TCP) is a technical assistance initiative of the U.S. Department of Transportation focused on addressing the transportation challenges faced by historically disadvantaged communities. The St. Louis TCP program was awarded to St. Louis County and is coordinated in partnership with the City of St. Louis and St. Louis Economic Development Partnership (STL Partnership).
