Protagonist Café is now open and offers an amazing concept. The name is a reference to the theme as a literary café, perfect for avid book lovers.

Located in the Soulard neighborhood, customers will be delighted by the bright interior, comfortable couches and the 27-foot floor-to-ceiling bookcase which holds approximately 3,000 books for guests to enjoy during their visit. There is even a special designated area for “take one, leave one” books.

In addition to the cozy interior, customers can enjoy a glass of wine, coffee or tea while enjoying a delectable house made, vegan, sweet or savory bakery item.

For extreme coffee lovers, bottomless coffee options are available. The exclusive tea menu includes loose-leaf tea from Big Heart Tea Co., a local favorite in St. Louis.

Protagonist offers organic fair-trade certified expresso and coffee beans that can be purchased to enjoy in the comfort of your home. Additionally, vegan cakes can also be ordered through the website for special occasions.

The owners of Protagonist Café also opened Pieces: Board Game Bard and Café three years ago, the first board game full service restaurant in St. Louis. Pieces is located just two blocks from the café.

The STL Partnership was instrumental in helping Protagonist Café receive Economic Development Administration (EDA) funds. “Improvements were made by the owners and we were glad to help provide resources to grow their business,” said Tim Bohnert, Loan Officer for the Business Development Department at the STL Partnership.
